An elegant, photographic realism scene of a dark navy hardcover book mockup standing upright on a clean white desk, its dust jacket reading “Flawless Copy” in understated silver lettering. Beside it, a neat stack of manuscript pages is held by a minimalist black binder clip, the top page showing before-and-after paragraphs, one cluttered and one polished, with the improved version highlighted by a subtle pale blue overlay. A slim, brushed-metal desk lamp outside the frame casts warm, directional light from the right, creating a refined contrast between illuminated text and softly shadowed background. Shot at eye level with rule-of-thirds composition and moderate depth of field, the mood is confident, polished, and authoritative, ideal for representing premium copyediting outcomes.

Copyediting With VJB Edits

Copyediting should be the first service you book, way before a proofread. It involves reviewing the writing with the aim to improve clarity and consistency, as well as correct sentence and paragraph structure. A copyedit refines the wording, checks grammar and punctuation, smooths awkward phrases, ensures a consistent style, ensures specifics are identical (e.g. a character with blue eyes should have blue eyes throughout), and flags confusing passages.

Whereas proofreading focusses on catching surface errors at the end of a job, copyediting actively improves how the text reads, whilst preserving the author’s voice.

I have been copyediting on and off since 2018, first as a PAYE copyeditor in the cybersecurity industry, editing reports, social media posts, email content, and marketing material.

I have been working freelance since 2021, and have edited online biographies for celebrities and keynote speakers, blogs, social media posts, newsletters, and website copy.

I have provided several copyediting services for John Fennec, author of Artificial Artifacts. My work has included a full copyedit of a companion piece to this novel; a copyedit of a new short story titled JimmyGoggle; and additional editing of selected novel chapters where errors were identified.
